Wedding Dress Alterations: What you Need to Know (and Bring!) at Soliloquy

Congratulations on finding the wedding dress of your dreams, your soliloquy! Our exclusive partnership with Barbara Kavchok means that your wedding gown is hand-crafted and one-of-a-kind. Once your dress is constructed, we have the important task of ensuring you look absolutely stunning as you walk down the aisle. This is where wedding dress alterations come in, and we're here to guide you through the process.

What are wedding dress alterations?

When you order a dress from a typical bridal shop, it usually comes in a standard size based on a size chart provided by the designer or company. However, we all know that humans aren't "standard size." Alterations are the modifications made to your dress to ensure it fits you perfectly. These alterations can include changes to the hemline, adjusting the bodice for a tighter or looser fit, and any other necessary adjustments that cater to your unique measurements.

Sometimes, the alterations required can be so significant that they may distort the dress or become unfeasible. We understand the frustration of investing in a dress that doesn't make you feel like an absolute goddess. That's why we prioritize ensuring a flawless fit for every bride.

How do we handle bridal alterations at Soliloquy?

At Soliloquy, we take a different approach to alterations thanks to our fabulous designer and talented alterations team at our Washington, D.C. bridal shop. We're committed to providing you with the best possible fit, so we offer as many fittings as needed until your dress is absolutely perfect.

The wedding dress alterations process begins early on during the dress construction. Handmade bridal gowns by Barbara Kavchok means we are able to offer made-to-measure gowns for our brides. We gather measurement information and the BK Team adjust their pattern before cutting the fabric. Each gown is crafted on dress forms sculpted to your specific measurements, using special pads. This means that your dress is already closer to a perfect fit before any alterations are made!

Once your finished dress arrives at Soliloquy, we schedule a bridal fitting. During the fitting, we assess the fit, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure your overall satisfaction with your bridal look.

If alterations are needed, you will have a final fitting. This final fitting allows you to see yourself in the completed dress, revel in your beauty, and take it home.

What do you need to bring to your wedding dress alterations appointment?

To ensure a seamless alterations process, please bring the following items to your appointment:

  1. The Shoes: It's crucial to have the exact shoes you plan to wear on your wedding day for the first fitting. If you haven't found your shoes yet, please know the height of the heels you intend to wear and bring a pair of similar height. This will help us determine the perfect hemline length. We want to avoid any mishaps where you're tripping over your dress or looking disproportionate on your big day.

  2. The Undergarments: Some brides prefer shape-wear or specialized bras, while others opt for plain nude underwear or going commando (goodbye, panty lines!). We respect your personal choice and want you to feel comfortable. However, undergarments, particularly shape-wear, can affect the fit of the dress. So, please bring your chosen undergarments to the fitting to ensure a flawless fit.

  3. Your Intention: It's essential to consider what matters most to you when it comes to your wedding dress. Is it comfort or the look? While a sleek fitted look may be visually appealing, comfort is equally important, considering you'll be wearing your dress throughout your wedding day. If you find the dress uncomfortable during the fitting, it's unlikely to feel great during the 12 hours of your wedding celebration. In such cases, we can explore the option of a more comfortable reception dress for you to change into. However, if the look is your top priority, we're here to make it happen, although some level of comfort may need to be sacrificed.

We're here to help!

If you have any questions or concerns about fittings, bridal alterations, or any other aspect of finding or creating your dream bridal look, please don't hesitate to reach out.
